Delia's Paw Print Tattoo

I finally did it! Getting a tattoo of Delia's paw print has been a goal since she joined our family. A few weeks ago a friend and I went to Self Inflicted Studio in St. Louis and the amazing Zack "Panda" Donahue imprinted my baby girl's paw onto my wrist. He took the photocopy of Delia's paw print and duplicated it amazingly.

I got her print by placing her paw on an ink pad, then placing her inked paw on a piece of paper. I was shocked when I saw the print. Her metacarpal pad left an almost perfect heart shape. I knew THAT was the print to use.

The staff at Self Inflicted Studio were great. Everyone was friendly and knowledgeable and the shop was super clean and comfortable. Zack did a great job and was a pleasure to chat with as he worked.

Delia's paw print is already permanently imprinted on my heart, and now it is also on my wrist. I love looking down and seeing her paw there. It is comforting and always warms my heart.

Introducing...Chewy!

Click photos to view larger!

Delia has a new puppy brother. Meet Chewy! He's an 8-month old Kyi-Leo, or better known as a Lhasa-Apso/Maltese mix.

Meet Chewy! Delia's new puppy brother!
Meet Chewy!
Chewy was a regular at the doggie daycare/pet hotel where I work, and since I had been thinking of adopting a friend for Delia, my awesome bosses told me he was looking for a new home.

Chewy loves doggie daycare!
He is the perfect addition to our family! He is the best puppy brother Delia could ever want. She wasn't thrilled about this new little brother at first, but she is warming up to him. Delia loves to be chased, and Chewy loves to give chase, so they have a blast running in our yard and around the house. Delia has no problem sharing her toys with him. I love watching them pick out toys from the toy box together.

Delia is a princess and Chewy is 100% puppy boy. He is sooo much fun. He is always exploring and it is amazing the treasures he finds. As a typical growing boy everything he finds goes into his mouth, whether it is edible or not. His name truly fits him. He's keeping us on our toes! We absolutely love Chewy and I do believe he loves us.

Delia's Dish: Peanut Butter, Bacon and Banana Dog Treat Recipe

It's Spoil Your Pet Month, and even though I spoil Delia every day, I baked some special treats for her with three of her favorites...bacon, bananas, and peanut butter. She loved them so much she actually begged for more!

I followed this recipe from Epicurious with a little tweaking. (I didn't have any flax seeds, so we skipped those, and we didn't baste them with the honey mixture before baking because I was going to dip them in carob, but changed my mind after baking. She still loved them.)

Here's what I used:

1 1/2 cups of whole wheat flour
1 tbsp of honey
3 strips of bacon finely chopped
1 large egg
1/2 cup rolled oats
1/3 cup natural peanut butter
1 mashed banana

I mixed the mashed banana, peanut butter, honey, bacon, and egg; then added the oats and flour until well blended. I chilled the dough in the fridge for a little over an hour, then kneaded, rolled and cut. The dough was easy to knead and the cookie cutters cut the dough cleanly. The cookies baked for about 15 minutes at 350 degrees. Delia sat at the table waiting for them to cool. She could hardly stand the wait, but it was worth it.

How do you spoil your pet? Do you like to bake them special treats?

My Failure at Delia's Dental Care Routine and How I Plan to Fix It

Delia has horrible breath. It is my fault. We used to brush her teeth at least three times a week, but she put up such a fight, I felt terrible, so I stopped, which was worse for her in the long run. I've bought countless dental treats, water additives, and numerous flavors of toothpaste. I'm convinced she's got to be one of the pickiest dogs on the planet. She won't eat any of the chews, stops drinking the water with the additives and runs at the sight of a toothbrush. It doesn't matter if it is a brush, a finger brush, or what. She wants no part of it. The only thing she accepts is swabbing with Arm & Hammer Clinical Pet Care Swab Tooth Treatment swabs. This works in a pinch, but I know she needs regular brushing.

Groomers and veterinarians have all said she's an angel for them when they brush her teeth. Thankfully, PetSmart gooming services offers walk-in teeth brushing, which we use twice a month. I recently watched her groomer at PetSmart as she brushed Delia's teeth. She didn't know I was watching, but I saw her standing there, oh, so nice and quietly, letting the groomer brush her teeth as if it were her most favorite activity in the world. She was indeed angelic. I couldn't believe it. I was proud of her for being such a good girl, but a wee bit irritated, too. Why couldn't she be as good for me, her mom, as she is for a woman she sees a couple of times a month? I even mentioned this to the groomer. Her answer, "Because you're Mom." Yep, it was my fault. I'd let her get away with teeth brushing tantrums.

So, I'm following Fidose of Reality's 10 Tips for Dogs Who Hate Teeth Brushing to re-introduce regular brushing into our routine. We're going to go slow and easy. It may not be much fun for either of us at first, but I'm determined to make it a positive, healthy routine for the best dental health for my best girl.

I love this smile, so I'm going to do my best to take care of it from now on.

Do you follow a dental care routine with your pet? How do you tackle teeth brushing?

The Mission to Bring Randy the Pig Home

An animal is surrendered to a shelter. This animal has a loving home to return to. The animal is being held in quarantine for 30 days, then will be evaluated for adoption. Again, this animal has a loving home waiting, with a woman who WANTS to care for him. A woman who knows his needs better than the organization currently in possession of him. An organization that admitted to her to not being able to properly care for this animal before transferring him to Longmeadow Rescue Ranch. An organization that stated that it did not have room for this animal at the ranch due to a wait list. Yet, he’s being held alone, in a strange place, when he could be at home in familiar surroundings being cared for by people who love him.

Why? Because this animal is a pig, Randy, who was surrendered to the Humane Society of Missouri by his owner, who had taken him there in a panic when faced with eviction, rather than return him to the woman whom he had contractually agreed to return him if he was unable to keep him. Randy’s micro chip led the HSMO to contact her when he was surrendered to them. When she stated her relationship to Randy she was refused. The HSMO refuses to release Randy to Dawn Blackburn because she is a breeder. A responsible, reputable breeder of Juliana pigs. Dawn has two pigs she breeds once or twice a year in order not to over-breed them and cause them harm. Her pigs are not tools abused for income. They are well cared for members of her family.
Photo of Randy courtesy of Dawn Blackburn.
Though Dawn has a legal contract stating Randy is to be returned to her if his owners were unable to care for him, she has been denied. Because they don't deal with breeders. When Dawn asked to see their policy, The HSMO refused to provide proof of their policy not to deal with breeders.

The animals at Longmeadow Rescue Ranch are well cared for. The concern about Randy is that he is being treated as livestock. Randy has been raised and trained as a family pet, not conditioned to the life of a livestock animal. But, because it is their policy to not deal with breeders, Randy is left in limbo.

How do we help animals like Randy who have fallen victim to the unfortunate bad reputations of breeders, whether the breeder is good or bad? I've dealt with puppy millers and witnessed the horrors of puppy mills first hand. I know how awful disreputable breeders are. I have also dealt with reputable, responsible breeders who love their animals and only want the best for them. Breeders who care about the good of the breed as well as the individual animal. Unfortunately, because of the bad, the good suffer. Is it Randy’s fault that because of the bad, he is homeless?

I understand the policy of not dealing with breeders, but also understand that, though Dawn Blackburn is a breeder, she has stated she will never re-sell a pig and would not re-sell Randy. He will be given a loving home with her or with family knowledgeable about caring for a pig, that she is confident can give Randy a great home.

My purpose with this post is to share Randy's story, not to disparage the HSMO, or choose sides, but to be another voice for Randy.

One Dog Organic Bakery was created after the owner, Veronica, lost a beloved feline family member due to kidney failure caused by melamine found in a food recall. After seeing so many pet food and treat recalls, Veronica started cooking and baking her pet's food and growing One Dog Organic Bakery. With treats baked fresh in small batches to ensure freshness and quality with GMO-Free, 100% human-grade, fresh ingredients from the USA, each batch is human-tested and approved by One Dog Organic Bakery's own, Milo. They can also customize treats to your dog's needs if your dog has allergies.

These healthy treats DO NOT contain: Chemical preservatives, fillers, by-products, hormones, salt, or artificial colorings or flavorings. This makes me, as a dog mom, happy.

We received one bag each of the Ginger Snaps with Joint Mobility, Pumpkin Spice with Flaxseed, and Peanut Butter with Chia Seeds flavors to try. She tried them all, but the Peanut Butter with Chia Seeds was her favorite.
